Satan's Taunt

One is two, I'm telling you,
The truth is surely plain to see.
And two and three are five, it's true,
But not the way they're meant to be.
Four is four, not two plus two,
It can't be such an oddity.
Five is five, but three is too,
You have to view them properly.
Well, six is six, like pickup sticks,
But seven is three, it has to be.
And eight is seven, inbetwixt,
So nine minus six is nothing, not three.
If you can't see, your mind's too strict,
Your memory, is not the key.
You have to look at four, five, and six,
You mustn't think, you have to see!
This poem represents Darl and how he thinks. He thinks about himself thinking and his thoughts jump around and are confusing like the poem. Darl's thinking can be seen on Pg 80-81.

Addie laid to rest.

Jewel and his beloved horse.
the frickin' thing up. He kept saying "Its not balanced. It can't be moved its not balanced". Was it really that important for it to be balanced. It just had to go from upstairs to the wagon. That's all! And the smell! Disgusting! I thought I was going to puke. It was horrible so I tried to get it done as fast as I could. Of course goddamn Cash yells out halfway to the wagon "Stop its not balanced". Well who gives a crap. I got it there just fine. I just don't understand them at times. And the smell!
Eerie just eerie. The way she yelled out for Cash before she want was just eerie. Its a shame she had Anse looking after her. He's a jerk. Calling for me at the last minute. I could have saved her if he wasn't so concerned about the money. I mean i'm known for not collecting a payment. That would explain why i'm fifty thousand dollars in debt. That poor women stuck with them. Her two sons left just for three dollars. Now what will they do without her. That girl will have a lot of work to do.

doesn't he treat me better? He's my son, my only son! He keeps losing weight and he's more and more tired. He needs a doctor and he needs to be looked at, but Anse won't pay. I dished out his jobs to Dewey Dell and the rest I did myself. He needs the rest. Why won't he tell me what's up? Where must he go at night? I'm trying my best to help him, but it doesn't seem to work. Then the day came when he didn't show up in the morning for work. At noon he rode up the hill to us on a horse. He worked at night for that horse. A horse. He loves the horse more than me. I am replaced by and lost to a horse. My son has left me... for a horse. There's no reason to live. I ran to the house and began to cry.
Why must Darl go? I know but I will never tell. Darl is my brother. Why is Darl crazy? Is it because he knows my mother is a fish and Jewel's mother is a horse? They're taking him. To men are taking him. I don't think he is crazy. He is my brother. I want to see the train. Darl keeps laughing. He knowns my mother is a fish. Is Darl laughing at that? They will take him to Jefferson. I won't see him again. He's going to ride a train. I want to see the train. Darl is my brother. He set the barn on fire. Where do they go at night? They are gone now. Where did they go?
